DESCRIPTION:

Prayer ropes (called by various names in different ethnic traditions) have been used by Orthodox people for centuries — by monastics and non-monastics — as an aid in reciting the Jesus Prayer, and cultivating the continual "prayer of the heart."  A prayer rope is used both to count and to help concentrate while saying the Jesus Prayer; when worn on the wrist, it also serves as a visual and tactile reminder to pray constantly.

This video very carefully and thoroughly teaches everything that is necessary to make prayer ropes.  In addition to demonstrating how to make the knots, how to join them in a circle and make a tassel, two different ways of making a cross are shown, plus, what materials to use, how many knots to make, using beads, etc.  The techniques shown were learned from Mother Apolinaria of the Holy Dormition Monastery in Rives Junction, Michigan.
